Effects of long-term exposure to black carbon

What do the studies
say?

The study’s authors looked at data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, which included over 100,000 participants. They found that those who were exposed to higher levels of black carbon were more likely to die from lung cancer and cardiovascular disease than those who were not exposed to black carbon.

In addition, the study’s authors found that black carbon was associated with a variety of other health problems, including respiratory and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and premature death.

It was also stated in the study that more research is needed to better understand the mechanisms by which black carbon affects human health before any firm conclusions can be drawn. A separate study, published in the journal “PLoS One”, looked at the relationship between black carbon exposure and cognitive function in a group of older adults.
